well if you've got the motor on TDC is should be dot to dot. But i've also heard you can reverse the cam gear if it's a general motors car and for fifteen twenty bucks of machine work you can mill the cam gear and reverse it as i don't think you can find them pre emmisions anymore. But by doing the minor milling you can get  much more advance out of them and ranges from 15-18hp increases for a twenty dollar bill. All GM can gears are emmissions set ups unless special ordered anymore so for a little time on a lathe it's worth it.
