I have a possible PNP switch problem. Is there any special trick for gaining access to replace?

2000 Volvo s40.  Wratcheting the shifter has worked in past, when car would not start.  Now, that doesn't work.  I figure PNP has finally failed.  Could it be the shifter solenoid?  Is it usually the PNP?  I can see the PNP under the battery (on top tranny), is it as easy  as it appears to replace?
