Plug up the car to OBDII compliant device and see if it has trouble codes. Then find out what the trouble codes are for or if there are none.....find a tuner and he can tell you what it is doing and may even be able to idle it down for you, but that's money we are talking about. The simplest thing you can do is check you Idle Air Control Sensor, I don't know where it is on your car so get a manual and find it or search online. Should be in the throttle body or close to it. Find it, look into the little taped hole or holes that go to it, determine if any trash is in the holes, clean them out with a pipe cleaner, or blow it out with pressurized air. Be careful not to hit the sensor and you should take it out if you can before you do this anyway. I had this problem on my STI but your car may be different. Note: I just found the problem myself and fixed because my tuner didn't know what to do and said it was fine anyway.
