In my BMW 740il i had it replaced and the mechanic ordered it from a local parts store. Bad mistake i had to put my bmw on a trailer and take to my regular mechanic. he took off the sensor and replaced it with the old one the guy took off and it started so he put a new one on and i had no problem. as far as where located under hood, dont know. It took about hour and half to install. As far as the other mechanic I dont think he will ever try to work on BMW again.
Make sure you get the correct sensor when you install.
